Introduction Navigation Course Highlights

My starter navigation day courses are available in both the Peak District and Lake District. Learning how to navigate can be a daunting task, but taking courses specifically designed for beginners can make the process significantly easier. These courses are tailored to those who have little to no navigation experience and are designed to provide a solid foundation of knowledge to build upon.

One of the most important reasons to learn how to navigate in the mountains is for safety. A wrong turn or misreading of a map can lead to lost time, and in some cases, dangerous situations. By knowing how to navigate properly, hikers and climbers can avoid getting lost, and can quickly find their way back to camp or the trailhead if necessary.

Another reason to learn how to navigate is to enhance the overall experience of being in the mountains. When you know where you are and where you're going, you can appreciate the beauty of the landscape more fully, and can explore with greater confidence. Navigating in the mountains allows you to discover new trails and hidden gems that you might not have found otherwise.

This beginner navigation course will start to teach you the fundamental skills you need to navigate safely and confidently through hills. I understand that everyone learns differently, so we'll cover a variety of skills that cater to different learning styles. You'll have plenty of opportunities to practice these skills so that you start to feel confident in your surroundings. I want you to be comfortable using what you've learned once the course is over. By the end of the course, you'll have a solid foundation in navigation and be able to use your skills in the mountains. Everyone should have the opportunity to explore and enjoy the great outdoors and I hope that this course will help you do just that. Happy navigating!

Navigating through the mountains can be a challenging task, especially when the conditions are not in your favor. However, with our comprehensive courses, we aim to teach you everything you need to know about mountain navigation, regardless of your starting point.

What we will cover on a 1 day basic course:

• Using different map scale and map symbols
• Genreal map symbols
• Orienting a map using compass and features
• Estimate distances on map
• Estimate time it will take you
• Differentiate between up and down hill
• Recognise peaks, valleys, cols, ridges etc...
• Start to use handrails
• Look at how you can plan routes
• Taking Grid References
• Emergency procedures

In short ... I'm a fully qualified and insured Mountain Leader and NNAS Bronze/Silver course provider. In my spare time, I'm a Search Technician with my local search and rescue team yorksar.co.uk. Since 2015, I have been working with the guides and clients of Spanish Highs, Sierra Nevada in Spain. Now offering my mountain knowledge and trips throughout the UK and Ireland.
