Fun and educational navigation courses in the Peak District and Lake District National Parks designed to suit everyone. Ever got lost or wondered where you are, been caught out in low cloud and mist, disorientated and not sure on your position. Let me help you become a confident navigator, learn how to read a map, use a compass and discover the best techniques on relocating and navigating yourself out on the hill.
Navigation refers to the process of planning, monitoring, and controlling the movement of from one place to another. It can involve using various methods and tools, such as maps, compasses or GPS to determine one's position and the best route to a destination. Technology can fail so the old way of map and compass in this case is always the best. Maybe you have the basics but are wanting to improve your skills, looking at contours and more subtle features in the landscape, using strategies for relocation or finding more difficult features.
Navigation doesn't have to be hard, you don't need to be Einstein and there's no technical kit needed, just your map and compass (which I can provide for the day)! Navigation is a crucial skill to develop if you plan on heading out into the moorland and mountains, especially in the UK with our ever changing diverse weather. You're never too young or old to start using your map and compass on walks.
This is the day for you if you have had no previous or very little map reading & compass learning. It's a great starter day to get you into the basics of navigation in our hills.
We will cover basics on planning a route, setting the map, hazards, measuring distance and timing, how to gather information as you walk, look at map and land features plus the basics of map keys and finally the skill of taking a compass bearing.
The National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) is a personal performance program designed for individuals of all ages to enhance their navigation skills and boost their confidence in exploring the outdoors.
The Navigator Awards cater to outdoor enthusiasts, regardless of their activity, age, or fitness level, granting them the freedom to discover the paths, trails, hills, and mountains of the British countryside.
There's no better way to improve your navigation skills than putting them into practice in the dark, this not only increases your awareness of your surroundings but it's the perfect scenario to practise skills needed in poor weather. It's also really good fun!
